The rounding note
Niaouli
A soft green aromatic from the same family as tea tree. It rounds the eucalyptus so the cream smells like a plant, not a pharmacy.
Melaleuca viridiflora
Niaouli essential oil sits between eucalyptus and tea tree — fresh, slightly sweet, far less sharp than either. Its job in this formula is aromatic balance. Remove it and the cream smells clinical; with it, the scent fades to almost nothing within a few minutes of application.
The smallest of the three
Niaouli is present in a small proportion. Its job is the finish of the scent rather than the feel of the cream.
Family resemblance
Melaleuca viridiflora is a relative of tea tree and cajeput, native to New Caledonia and northern Australia.
If you are sensitive
Essential oils are the part of any natural formula most likely to irritate sensitive skin. Patch test on the inner forearm before using it over a large area.
